Chapter 7 of Devi Mahatmyam describes how the fierce and terrible-looking Goddess Kali appeared from the forehead of Goddess Kalika to kill Chanda and Munda, the servants of the demons, Shumbha and Nishnumbha, who had sent them to capture Goddess Kalika. After she kills them, Kali takes their severed heads to Goddess Chandika, who tells her that henceforth, she will become famous in the whole world as Chamunda, the slayer of the two demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga’s blessings and protection.
