Chapter 5 of Devi Mahatmyam talks about how the demons, Chanda and Munda, after seeing Goddess Kalika, praise her beauty to their masters, the demons, Shumbha and Nishumba. Shumbha sends a demon called Sugreeva as his emissary to plead his suit with Kalika. But Kalika’s reply is that her suitor should win her in war, thereby taking away her pride and proving to be her equal in strength. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga’s blessings and protection.
