Chapter 13, the final chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam, talks about how King Suratha and the trader to whom Sage Sumedhas narrated the stories of Goddess Durga, obtained the boons they wished by doing penance to the Goddess. King Suratha regained his kingdom and defeated his enemies. In his next life, he was reborn as the 8th son of the Sun God and ruled the world. The trader asked for wisdom. He gained not only wisdom but also Moksha. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke the Goddess’ blessings and protection.
