Chapter 10 of Devi Mahatmyam describes the killing of Shumbha, the king of the demons and the brother of Nishumbha, who was slain by Goddess Chandika. After the other Shaktis merged with her, the Goddess engaged in battle with Nishumbha and finally killed him. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke the Goddess’ blessings and protection.
