Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6: The Meditative Yogi

April 13, 2022
()

Krishna continued with his discourse on the greatness of Yogi and the power of meditation.“Those performing duties without desiring results and with no attachments to sense objects are true renunciates and yogis. One can elevate oneself through the power of the mind, which can both be one’s friend and enemy. The conquered mind is a friend; otherwise, it is an enemy. Yogis conquer their mind and senses; undisturbed by circumstances, rise beyond the joy- sorrow, honour-dishonour dualities, look at everything with impartial intellect, attain peace and unwavering devotion to God, and thus remain distinguished beings. For attaining the Yogic state, be in solitude and free of desires, and constantly meditate with mind-body-control. Sit firmly in a peaceful place, on a seat on top of Kush grass, deerskin and a cloth, keep the body-neck-head straight, gaze at the nose tip, and meditate with a single point concentration, with thoughts and actions, controlled. With a fearless mind and a vow of celibacy, the Yogi should meditate only on Me, the supreme goal. His disciplined mind steady in meditation can lead to Nirvan and peace. Yog with temperate food, work, sleep, and recreation mitigates sorrow, while the mind made still by Yogic practice rejoices inner joy. In this state of Samadhi, one experiences eternal truth and divine bliss, unshaken even by great calamities. Renouncing worldly thoughts, desires and sense-pleasures, fix the mind only in God, and whenever it wanders, bring it back to God. The sinless Yogi, with his mind calm, passions subdued and ever in touch with God, achieves the highest state of transcendental happiness. They see God in all beings and all beings in God, worship Me as the Supreme Soul and dwell only in Me. And they also feel others’ joys and sorrows as they feel theirs.” But when Arjuna felt it was tough to control the mind, Krishna agreed but said that practice and detachment could help achieve mind-control and Yogic perfection. Then, questioned by Arjuna about those who endeavour but falter to reach the goal of Yog, Krishna asserted that such unsuccessful Yogis, on death, stay in the virtuous’ abode, are born again in pious families possessing divine wisdom, get drawn towards God through past merits, become desire-free, and attain perfection. “Yogi is a superior being, and even among them, those with devotion, faith and minds absorbed in Me, remain the highest.”
