Shri Ketu Kavacham

Ketu is one of the 2 lunar nodes and shadow planets in Vedic astrology. Kavacham means ‘armor’. Ketu Kavacham is a hymn or Stotra that can protect one from the malefic effects of Ketu.

Importance of Ketu

Ketu has great importance in astrology. One cannot escape Ketu’s influence, as it brings spiritual growth. To achieve such growth, it is essential to experience the effects of Ketu in our life. In fact, planets like Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu seek sacrifices from us. Rahu represents worldly desires, while Ketu is associated with otherworldly desires. It brings suffering and loss and, in the process, turns us to thoughts of God.

Ascetics are people who have Ketu’s blessings. They are spiritual and have shed all materialistic desires and the desires of the senses. But Ketu’s blessings are not often accepted by most people. When this happens, they feel confused and detached. They also feel a sense of loss. But it is part of their growth, even though they may not understand it initially.

Apart from spirituality, asceticism, and detachment from materialism, Ketu also gives wisdom, knowledge, and self-awareness. It can bestow psychic and healing abilities. The person may master the art of natural healing or tantric healing. They may be able to heal those who are afflicted by ghosts and evil spirits.

Ketu also represents old people. Thus, Ketu assesses us by the way we treat old people. If we treat them badly, we may face Ketu’s wrath.

Ketu can cause mental disturbances and emotional upheavals in people. One who is afflicted by Ketu tends to become suspicious of everyone and everything. If Ketu is in conjunction with the Moon or opposes it, one may behave in a crazy manner.

It is good to worship Ketu if one has any mental stress or spiritual afflictions. Ketu supposedly belongs to the Jaimini lineage of rishis or sages, who founded one of ancient India’s philosophical schools of thought.

Ketu has the power to bestow many things on you if he is happy with your conduct.

But if you have done evil or selfish deeds in your past life, Ketu ensures that you will pay the price for it. Ketu also brings Moksha and liberation. Ketu Mahadasha runs for seven years usually, and during this period, much good or bad may happen to you depending on your past life karma.

Ketu Kavacham is found in the Brahmanda Purana. By reciting it regularly, one can pacify Ketu and get some relief from its malefic effects.

Ketu Kavacham

Kethum karala vadanam, chithra varnam, kireetinam,
Pranamami sada kethum, dwajaakaaram graheswaram
(I always salute Ketu, who has a face filled with horror, Who is of many colors, has a crown,
Who is shaped like a flag and is the Lord of planets)

Chithra varna sira pathu, bhalam dhoomra samadhyuthi,
Pathu nether pingalaksha, sruthi may raktha lochana
(Let the multicolored one protect my head, Let my hair be protected by he who produces smoke,
Let my eyes be protected by one with the reddish brown eye, And let what I hear be protected by he who has red blood eyes)

Granam pathu swarnabha schibukam simhikasutha,
Pathum cha kandam may Ketu skandou pathu grahadhipa
(Let my smell be protected by him who shines like gold, Let my chin be protected by the son of Simhika, Let my neck and feet be protected by Ketu, And let the Lord of planets protect my shoulder)

Hasthou pathu sura sreshta kukshim pathu maha graha,
Simhasana katim pathu madhyam pathu mahasura.
(Let my arms be protected by the chief of devas, Let the great planet protect my belly, Let my hip be protected by he who sits on the throne, And let the great asura protect my middle.)

Ooru pathu maha seersho januni may athi kopana,
Pathu padhou cha may kroora sarvangam nara pingala.
(Let my thighs be protected by the great head, Let my knees be protected by him with great anger, Let my feet be protected by the cruel one, And let all my body parts be protected by the reddish-brown God.

Ya idham kavacham divyam sarva roga vinasanam,
Sarva shatru vinasam cha dharanad vijayi bhaved
(This holy armor destroys all diseases, destroys all enemies and once worn will make you victorious).

Ithi Brahmanda Purane Ketu Kavacham sampoornam
(Thus ends the armor of Ketu from Brahmanda Purana).
