The Tamil month Aadi (mid-Jul to mid-Aug) is an auspicious month filled with the Divine energy and positive blessings. It is lined with many religious events and is widely celebrated for receiving blessings of prosperity, happiness, and protection. At the same time, this month falls in the Dakshinayana period, when the Devas (celestial beings) are sleeping. Hence, this month is generally not considered favorable for marriages, housewarming, and other personal ceremonies. Aadi month is dedicated exclusively to the worship of the Divine and receiving their blessings.

Here are 8 most important religious events in the month of Aadi, their significance, and the benefits of observing them.

1.  Aadi Pirappu :

The Tamil word ‘Pirappu’ means birth. Aadi Pirappu marks the birth or beginning of the auspicious Aadi month that is filled with Divine energies. It is also called Aadi Pandigai and is celebrated as a festival by offering sweets and savories to God. Newly wedded couples are invited to the girl’s home for a grand feast, and gifts are exchanged. On this auspicious day, married women change the sacred yellow thread to a fresh one in their Mangal Sutras. The entrance of the house is adorned with huge rangolis, and the doorstep is decorated with mango leaves.

2. Aadi Velli and Aadi Chevvai:

Aadi Velli denotes the Fridays in the Tamil month of Aadi. Aadi Fridays are filled with Goddess power and blessings and are auspicious to connect with the Divine feminine power on these days. You can perform Homa, Pooja, and special rituals for the Goddess during Aadi Fridays and are believed to invoke her ultimate protection around you and your family. As per Vedic astrology, during the Aadi month, Sun will be in the zodiac sign Cancer, ruled by Moon; Moon denotes the Goddess, making this month extra special for Goddess worship. All the Fridays of Aadi month are considered very auspicious to worship the divine mother and perform special Poojas at Goddess temples and homes. 3. Aadi Amavasya:

‘Amavasya’ means New Moon. The New Moon in the Tamil month of Aadi, called Aadi Amavasya, is a special day ideal for receiving ancestral blessings. On Aadi Amavasya, the ancestral souls are more willing to accept Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) offered to them and, in turn, shower their abundant blessings on you.

4. Aadi Pooram:

 The day ruled by the Pooram or Purva Phalguni star in Aadi month is called Aadi Pooram. It is also the birthday of Andal, one of the 12 Alwar saints in Vaishnava tradition. Andal is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. On Aadi Pooram, many conduct Homas (fire labs) and Poojas. The festival is celebrated with grandeur at Srivalliputtur, the birthplace of Andal. This festival is also celebrated at Sri Rangam Temple for 10 days. On the 10th day, the marriage of Andal and Ranganathar (Lord Vishnu) is celebrated. It is believed that unmarried girls pray to Andal on the 10th day to get married soon and be blessed with the perfect partner. In Shakti temples, the Goddess is decorated with dozens of glass bangles, and after the Pooja, the bangles are distributed to devotees for progeny, wedding, and prosperity blessings.

5. Aadi Perukku:

Aadi Perukku is the 18th day in the Aadi month. It is a festival of prosperity and fertility. The blessings of Lakshmi are abundantly available on this. During Aadi Perukku, Goddess Lakshmi becomes full of joy and is all-giving and blesses you with abundance in the forms of wealth, fertility, courage, education, and children.

6. Aadi Thapasu:

 As per mythology, Aadi Thapasu is the day when Goddess Parvati, as Gomathy Amman, meditated on Shiva, who appeared before Her in the form of Shankara Narayana. Aadi Thapasu is celebrated as a very grand festival in Shankaranarayanar Swamy Koil, Tamil Nadu.

7. Varalakshmi Vratham:

 Varalakshmi is the boon (Vara) bestowing form of Goddess Lakshmi. Varalakshmi Vratham is the “Boon-Bestowing Friday” to invoke Goddess Lakshmi in the form of Varalakshmi, who grants boons and wishes. According to traditional belief, propitiating Goddess Varalakshmi on Varalakshmi Vratham day can bless you with the combined benefits of Lakshmi's eight divine forms.

8. Aadi Krithigai :

Aadi Krithigai is the day ruled by Krittika star in the month of Aadi. This day is dedicated to Muruga worship, as Krittika is the favorable star of Muruga. Special Poojas and rituals are performed for Muruga in the 6 battle house temples called Arupadai Veedu in Tamil Nadu.
