dateMay 22, 2023

What is Rahu?

Rahu is the North lunar node in Vedic astrology, while the South node is called Ketu. They are also known as dark or shadow planets due to their association with solar and lunar eclipses. They do not rule any zodiac signs, although some astrologers believe that they favor Mercury and Jupiter's signs. Others claim that Rahu favors Aquarius and Ketu favors Scorpio.

Rahu is a Sanskrit word that means ‘conceal’, ‘engulf’ or ‘hide’. It is associated with material possessions and worldly desires. But, it also has an association with spiritual evolution.

Rahu’s Characteristics

Rahu in astrology is the karaka (indicator) of fame, worldly desires, greed, manipulation, high intelligence, obsessive behavior, dementia, foreigners, mass disease, and inertia. Its nature is Vata or Airy. He's also the significator of irreligious people, outcastes, falsehood, harsh speech, logical fallacy, uncleanliness, bones, abdominal ulcers, and transmigration.

According to the Skanda Purana, Rahu can boost your power and turn your enemy into a friend. It can heal poisonous snake bites. Rahu is one of the Krodha Devatas (terror-inspiring gods) in Buddhism.

Rahu is a master of deception. He signifies people who deal in drugs and poisons, people who cheat, pleasure seekers, operators in foreign lands, insincere and immoral acts, etc.

Rahu can give suicidal tendencies, phobias, poisonous bites, theft, murder, imprisonment, and ailments like skin diseases, cholera, dysentery, swelling of the uterus, constipation, etc.

 Rahu’s Friends and Foes

Signs that are friendly toward Rahu are Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Enemy signs are Cancer and Leo. The friendly planets are Mercury, Venus, and Saturn. The Sun, Moon, and Mars are enemies. Rahu gives favorable results in Taurus and Libra. It gives one power when it is well-placed or exalted. Other benefits are fame, money, success in politics, and charisma.

 Rahu and Saturn

Rahu in astrology is like Saturn in its effects. Its color is smoky blue, and its nature is instinctual and animalistic. Rahu wants all that gives pleasure, but it is never satisfied. Although Rahu does not rule any zodiac sign, Virgo is its sign. Virgo is actually ruled by Mercury, but as Rahu is like Saturn and Mercury is a friend of Saturn, Rahu has some authority over Virgo.

 Rahu and Chemicals

Poisonous chemicals like pesticides, fertilizers, and disinfectants are ruled by Rahu in astrology. It also rules substances that have a strong and pungent smell, like sulfur-dioxide gas. Thus, Rahu plays a role whenever poisonous substances are involved. Rahu has no equal when it comes to giving sudden good fortune (as in gambling), name and fame, etc. It is why Western astrologers consider it to be the greatest benefic force.

Rahu’s gemstone is honey-colored hessonite or Gomed. Air is its element, and its direction is south-west. Rahu attains full maturity at the age of 42. According to the Puranas, Rahu is snakelike, has a huge body, and is very powerful. Rahu and Ketu stay 1 1/2 years in each zodiac sign.

 Story of Rahu and Ketu

The gods and demons, as per Hindu mythology, churned the Milky Ocean and got the divine elixir, Amrit. The gods, however, did not want to share it with the demons. Vishnu, as Mohini, was distributing the Amrit to the Devas. But a demon by the name of Svarbhanu got wind of the gods’ plan and sat among the gods, disguised as one of them. But the Sun and the Moon saw through his disguise and raised the alarm. Vishnu cut off the demon’s head with his Sudarshana chakra. But Rahu had already drunk some drops of the Amrit by then. So he became an immortal head, separated from his immortal body.
