According to mythology, Pitru Loka is a place between heaven and Earth where three generations of a person’s ancestors reside. They live until they are reborn.

These souls descend to Earth and visit their descendants’ houses during Pitru Paksha to eat the offerings made to them.

Pitru Devatas receive the offerings during the Mahalaya Paksha fortnight. The Puranas claim that a day in Pitru Loka equals a month in our calendar. For them, one night becomes Krishna Paksha, and another day becomes Shukla Paksha. Thus, the offerings made during this time will last them for an entire year.

As per the Garuda Purana, performing Pooja for Pitrus/ancestors during Mahalaya Paksha can bring peace and prosperity, as satisfied Pitrus will bless their descendants abundantly. The Agni Purana claims that Mahalaya Shraddh liberates ancestors from karmic bonds and helps them attain Moksha. Those who failed to perform the annual Shradh to their ancestors can perform it. Feeding crows and cows during this period is also good.
