Vasanta Panchami, also popularly celebrated as Saraswati Pooja, is observed in the early part of February during the special 5th Waxing Moon, marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It means the ‘Fifth Day of Spring’ and celebrates Goddess Saraswati, the Divine Feminine Archetype of education, wisdom, and knowledge, embodying the free flow of universal intelligence and consciousness, endowing us with the powers of speech, wisdom, and learning.

Legend of Saraswati, Hayagriva and Ezhuthari Nathar

According to legend, Brahma, Creator of the Cosmic Universe, wanted a sense of order and created Goddess Saraswati, the embodiment of wisdom and art, who emerged from his mouth. Revered as his consort, Brahma named her Goddess Vagdevi, the Goddess of speech and sound, who has healing and purifying powers.
Hayagriva is an incarnation of Vishnu, with a horse’s head and a bright, white human body. He is worshipped as ‘Gnanaswaroopa’ – the embodiment of all growth, knowledge, and supreme wisdom. Known as the Protector of Goddess Saraswati, he retrieved the Vedas stolen by Asuras Madhu and Kaitabha, after killing them and brought them back to Brahma.
Ezhuthari Nathar, also called Akshareshwara, is an incarnation of Shiva, who came to the rescue of Sudasman, an accountant of the Shiva temple and his sincere devotee, who feared punishment from the king for making an error in entry. He invoked Shiva in his prayers, and the Supreme God taking his form submitted the temple accounts correctly. Sudasman was surprised and realized the grace of Shiva, who later gave him ‘Darshan’ (sacred vision) as Ezhuthari Nathar (accountant).
