Dr. Pillai says New Moon is the time for connecting with the Archetypes of Gods and Angels that give you Transcendence. The absence of the Moon’s Energy is considered favorable for the Mind to grow into a quiet state. He further says the New Moon is the time that your soul can connect with the ancestors’ souls or to go by what the tradition says, they come down to your house and knock on the door. They are asking for food and if you give them food, especially this particular food (Tarpanam) and then they are happy and then they are not only happy, they bless you.
According to sacred texts, Amavasya is considered the appropriate day for performing rituals for our ancestors. The day is generally not preferred for auspicious ceremonies such as marriage or commencing a new project.
