Vashishta is one of the Sapta Rishi (Seven Great Sages) and his name denotes unparalleled excellence or brightness. According to the Bhagavata Purana, he was a Manasputra (mind-born son) of the Creator, Brahma and contributed extensively to the Rig Veda.
According to the epic Ramayana, Vashishta was the Kula Guru (family teacher and priest) of the Raghu dynasty and taught the principles of Vedanta to his royal pupil, Sri Rama, the victor of Ravana. He propagated the importance of truth, non-violence and penance, held great spiritual powers and emphasized the value of good deeds and commitment to the welfare of the world.
The crown jewel of all works on the Vedanta is Yoga Vashishta which contains the teachings of Sage Vashishta. It illustrates the path to self-realization by the union of the Jivatman (Individual Soul) and Paramatman (Supreme Soul) and describes Moksha (Salvation) as the attainment of bliss through Brahma Gnana (Knowledge of the Self).

Embodiment of Righteousness & Personification of Austerities
According to the Puranas, Vishwamitra (Friend of the Universe) was a dedicated Kshatriya King who gave up his kingdom to observe severe austerities, and overcame all obstacles (anger, pride, arrogance, lust and ego) to realize the Supreme God and become a Brahmarishi (Sage who attained the highest Divine knowledge). He was also the Guru of Sri Rama and his brothers and taught them the use of celestial weapons.
