Dattatreya, Supreme Embodiment of the Trinity

According to sacred texts, Dattatreya incarnated as the son of the great sage Atri and his wife, Anushya. The story explains how Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva wanted to test the chastity of Anusya and appeared in disguise before Anushya asking for food on one condition- that she would serve them without clothes.

Anushya, through her divine intuitive power perceived their intention, transformed them into babies, and fed them with her own milk. Pleased with her wise and devoted act, Sage Atri united the three babies into one, who became Dattatreya- the divine incarnation of the Trinity Gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Dattatreya is portrayed as having three heads and six hands, surrounded by four dogs representing four Vedas (Books of Wisdom), and the wish-fulfilling divine cow Kamadhenu is always near him.

Shirdi Sai Baba is considered as the divine incarnation of Dattatreya. Scriptures say that Shirdi Sai Baba incarnated as a 16-year old young lad in a meditating posture, under a Neem (Indian Lilac) tree in Shirdi, Maharashtra. What Will I Receive?

You will receive the sacred grey ash powder from the homa and kum-kum (Red Vermillion Powder), which will be blessed in the rituals. Keep this on your meditation altar and wear it on your forehead during meditation or at other times to expand the Divine blessings into your life.

Dr. Pillai explains this:

The ritual is the carbonization of thoughts. Carbon is our information bearing atoms. The carbon residue (ash) given out as Prasad is to be placed on the third eye area of the participants and carries the blessings of the archetypes invoked.
