Origin of Pasupatastra
Lord Krishna advised his devotee Arjuna to meditate on Shiva to receive the Pasupatastra which would empower him to win the war in the Mahabharata epic. In this war, Arjuna was greatly outnumbered and overpowered by the enemy army. Once Arjuna received this weapon from Lord Shiva, he gained the energy and blessings to win. This is recounted in the Drona Parva, 7th among the 18 books of the great epic Mahabharata.
Lord Shiva blessed Arjuna with this divine weapon but cautioned him to only use it in case of extreme emergencies, as its use on mortals with little strength could destroy the entire creation. The divine powers of this weapon enabled Arjuna to win the war without even using it; just its mere presence led him to victory!
Why did Krishna Recommend This Weapon to Arjuna?
Although Arjuna possessed the weapon, he could never use it during the war. Then, why did Krishna urge Arjuna to acquire this weapon?
