Thaipusam 2023: Murugan’s Auspicious Powertime to Vanquish Dark Forces & Gain Supreme Protection
Thaipusam is an auspicious Day dedicated to Murugan, Supreme God of War, and celebrated on the Pushya Nakshatra Day in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan-Feb). On this Powerday, Murugan received the gift of Vel- the Ultimate cosmic weapon from his mother, Goddess Parvati. The Vel is a powerful cosmic weapon that symbolises absolute truth, knowledge and the all-encompassing power of Shakti (Divine Feminine Energy).
Significance of Thaipusam Festival
The Thaipusam festival is a celebration of the victory of Murugan over evil. When he was granted the Vel by Goddess Parvati, he was armed to battle against three demons- Surapadman, Singamugan and Tarakasura who were the representation of hatred, greed and arrogance. With his Divine Vel, Murugan was able to vanquish the demons, and the Vel became the icon of purification, which destroys Karma and ignorance and helps vanquish evil, suffering and dispel Maya (illusions).
It is a Day of auspiciousness and abundant grace when you can free yourself from old thought patterns that can limit you. In Thaipusam 2023, the Pournami (Full Moon) in Pushya nakshatra, the nakshatra of selflessness and benevolence, creates a powerful opportunity for spiritual and personal evolution.

Murugan’s Vel (Spear): Dr. Pillai Explains
Dr. Pillai says, “Vel, which is the lance that Murugan carries, can erase your Karma- your money, relationship, health, and disease karma.” He describes the Vel as ‘Kadir Vel,’ which speaks about the quality of the Vel, which creates powerful heat and light, which spears through the limitations preventing your progress and allows room for your mindset to change.
Dr. Pillai further states, “The philosophy of Vel is that it is the symbol of wisdom. Wisdom is what leads you to victory. The sharp tip of the Vel represents the sharpness of the mind and also the ability to easily pierce through objects.
The Vel is both an internal and an external weapon. Internally, it represents the Kundalini force rising from the root chakra and piercing the third-eye chakra, resulting in the awakening of the third-eye and the destruction of ignorance. Externally, the Vel is the mightiest psychic weapon, capable of killing even the most powerful demons.”

Kavadi Attam (dance) is symbolic of debt bondage, the symbol of a burden carried by devotees. Kavadi during Thaipusam is rooted in the story of the demon Idumban, who fought against Murugan and was killed by him. Rishi Agastya pleaded with Murugan to restore his life.
