‘’Tamil New Year (Vedic New Year), when the Sun moves into Aries, is a time when the celestial alignment favors new beginnings and harnesses the auspicious power of the Sun to fill your entire year with blessings for abundance, health, and relationships. Every Tamil New Year has a name, and it repeats every 60 years, and on the New Year Day every year, a planet takes up the role of a King and forms a Court of Planets. With that position of power, the planets influence our lives that particular year.
In this Tamil New Year named Subhakrta, which means ‘Auspicious Activities,’ Saturn will reign as the King bringing opportunities, desire fulfillment, and persistence to achieve goals. Ushering in Tamil Puthandu

Tamil Puthandu (Tamil New Year) signifies the entry of Surya in Mesha Rashi, which creates powerful and auspicious energy for offering protection and enhances progress towards new and favourable beginnings. Tamil Puthandu marks the first day of the Chithirai month and includes performing the Tamil Puthandu Pooja to usher in the New Year.

How to Celebrate Tamil Puthandu

As part of the festivities of Tamil Puthandu, homes are cleaned, and entrances are decorated with colourful Kolams. A Kuthu Vilakku is placed in the centre of the Kolam and lit to dispel darkness. A cleansing or herbal bath with turmeric is taken, and new clothes are worn. The doorways are adorned with mango leaves. Food is prepared with six different flavours called ‘Arusuvai’ with other festive dishes for the auspicious day.

How to Do Tamil Puthandu Pooja

Prayers and Pooja are offered to Lord Ganapati and other Gods/Goddesses. For Panchangam Pooja, the Panchangam is placed in front of the deities in the Pooja room. The Tamil Puthandu Pooja includes ‘Aarti’, lighting of Sambrani or Agarbathi, flowers, garlands to deities, turmeric, kum-kum and Chandan, chanting of sacred Stotrams and singing devotional songs, ringing the Ghanta and offering fruits and sweets to the Gods as Prasad.
