The Viratham (Fasting) culminates with Soorasamharam, symbolizing Muruga’s victory over negativity and obstacles. Devotees traditionally break the fast after this sacred culmination, carrying forward prayers for courage, clarity, protection, and spiritual strength.
Shasti Vratham is a devotional fast observed in honor of Muruga. It is a period of prayer, discipline, and spiritual focus intended to deepen devotion and cultivate inner strength. During Skanda Shasti Vratham (Fasting), devotees may spend more time in prayer, chant hymns dedicated to Muruga, worship the Vel, visit Muruga temples, and maintain a simple and disciplined routine. The powertime is associated with self-control, mindfulness, concentration, spiritual reflection, and devotion.
Shasti Vratham is traditionally associated with spiritual benefits such as developing self-discipline and concentration, strengthening devotion to Muruga, and cultivating inner strength, courage, mindfulness, and mental clarity.

A general Shasti fasting pattern is to eat simple, light, vegetarian food and avoid non-vegetarian dishes, alcohol, and overly rich or indulgent foods. Skanda, Muruga, Kartikeya, and Subramanya are names associated with the same deity. “Skanda Shasti” refers to the sacred Shasti powertime dedicated to Muruga and is especially associated with his victory over Surapadman.
“Subramanya Shasti” is another name used in connection with worship of Subramanya or Muruga. In practice, both terms refer to Shasti worship associated with the same deity, though naming traditions may vary by region and community.
