Mahalakshmi Jayanthi: Birthday Of Goddess Lakshmi

Mahalakshmi Jayanthi is the birthday of the Goddess of wealth and auspiciousness, Lakshmi. According to Puranas, it is on this day, the Goddess emerged from the Kshira Sagara during the churning of the milky ocean. The resplendent Goddess is believed to have arisen from the ocean adorned with shining yellow clothes and ornaments and carried a golden pot overflowing with grains and gold in her hand. Her divine beauty illuminated all the worlds. Mahalakshmi Jayanthi is celebrated on the Shukla Ekadasi of Karthigai month (mid-Nov to mid-Dec). Worshiping her on this day can remove poverty and bestow wealth and overall prosperity.

Goddess Mahalakshmi Birth Story

According to Bhagavata Purana, the beautiful Goddess Mahalakshmi rose from the depths of Kshira Sagara or the ocean of milk when it was churned by the Devas and Asuras. With Mount Mandara as the center rod and snake Vasuki as the churning rope, they churned the ocean for obtaining Amrit, the nectar of immortality. During this event, Goddess Lakshmi emerged as the third last of 14 treasures from the milky ocean.
The Purana also describes that her gleaming beauty lit the sky, and Devas, Asuras, and Rishis were captivated by her enchanting beauty, grace, and splendor. When she stepped out of the ocean of milk,
  • Indra offered her the lotus throne
  • Gandharvas sang melodiously
  • Apsaras danced joyously to the divine music
  • Vishwakarma gave her divine ornaments
  • Brahma gave her a lotus, which was similar to the one in which he was born
After accepting these gifts, her eyes looked around, longing to see God Vishnu, her consort. As soon as she saw him, she walked towards him, laid the Mala named Vaijayanti around his neck, and joined him as his divine consort.

Significance of Mahalakshmi Jayanthi

Sacred texts hail Lakshmi as the Goddess of wealth, fortune, auspiciousness, and beauty. The word Lakshmi has originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Lakshya,’ which means aim or goal. Hence, the wealth Goddess remains the very purpose of life, as she symbolizes all that is good and auspicious, materially and spiritually.
