Diwali: The Festival Of Lights

Diwali is the festival of lights and marks the victory of good over evil. As light removes darkness, this festival is believed to dispel ignorance and negativity from our lives. According to legend, Vishnu destroyed the demon Narakasuran, who is considered the personification of greed, ego, and poverty on Diwali. Diwali In India

Diwali, which is traditionally known as the festival of lights originally, has its origin from the Tamil word “Deepavali” which means “rows of lamps”. As the light disperses darkness, this festival of lights removes negative thoughts, energies, and ignorance. Deepavali is a widely celebrated festival in India and is believed to bring in auspiciousness, prosperity, wealth, wellbeing, and happiness.

In South India, Diwali is celebrated to celebrate the triumph of Krishna over Narakasura. In Bengal, Goddess Durga or Kali, the goddess of strength, courage, and power is worshiped during Diwali and this worship is called “Kali Chaturdashi.” On the whole, Diwali or Deepavali is generally celebrated to usher in prosperity and progress, to celebrate the inner light and its victory over darkness.

How Do We Celebrate Diwali In India?

The celebration of Diwali also differs in different regions of India. In Northern states, Diwali is celebrated for four days from Trayodashi as Dhanteras on the first day, Naraka Chaturdashi on the second day, Lakshmi Pooja (Diwali) on the third day and Padwa on the fourth day. Each day has its own meaning and rituals. In most of the southern states of India, Diwali is celebrated for a period of 3 to 5 days before and after the Amavasya.
People have an oil bath early in the morning (as Lakshmi is believed to reside in gingelly oil on this day) and worship Krishna, Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesha and Kubera. Houses are cleaned, and beautiful rangolis are drawn at the house front. We also light lamps and burst firecrackers, which symbolizes the removal of darkness with light. Special Poojas and Homas are also performed on this day for gaining the blessings of Lakshmi and Kubera and lead a prosperous and happy life.
