Dattatreya Jayanthi: Birthday of the Supreme Guru
Dattatreya, or Datta, is the supreme Guru, who is considered as the divine incarnation of the Holy Trinity- Brahma, Narayana, and Rudra. According to Puranas, Dattatreya was born to Sage Atri and Anusuya. Datta is regarded as the pinnacle of supreme wisdom, compassion, love, and light to the world. His birthday, Dattatreya Jayanthi, is celebrated on the Purnima (Full Moon) day of the Tamil month Karthigai (Nov-Dec).
Importance of Datta Jayanti
Datta Jayanti is an auspicious day to worship the ultimate Guru for his abundant blessings. Propitiating him on his birthday can liberate you from the karmic bonds, remove suffering and fear, and grant you the knowledge to lead a successful and contented life. Datta is portrayed with three heads, six hands, and four dogs and stands near Kalpaga Vruksham and Kamadhenu, which have the powers to fulfil all your earnest wishes. He holds different weapons in his hands, each with unique powers to remove ego and grant Moksha.
Datta Jayanti Puja Vidhi
Devotees of Datta celebrate Datta Jayanti with special Archanas, Homas, and other rituals. In some places of India, people begin the celebration seven days before Datta Jayanti. People take an early bath (if possible in holy rivers) and observe complete or partial Vrat. Special Poojas are performed to Datta at homes and temples by offering flowers, lamps, incense, and Prasad. Reading of sacred books such as Avadhuta Gita and Jivanmukta Gita is followed by Datta devotees. People also sing bhajans and songs in praise of Datta, meditate upon him and visit his temples to receive Datta’s graceful blessings.
