First Pournami of Tamil New Year: Eradicate Your Karmic Bondage

Chitra Pournami is the first Pournami in the Tamil month of Chithirai. The day is considered very auspicious as both Pournami and Chitra Nakshatram come together on this day. It is a day for eradicating old karma and starting afresh. According to Vedic Astrology, Surya is exalted in Mesha Rashi, and Chandra is in Chitra Nakshatram.

Chitragupta: Divine Accountant & Evaluator of Karma

Chitragupta is revered as the Divine Accountant and Evaluator of one’s karma and keeps records for Yama Dharmaraja, the God of Death and Justice. According to the Padma Purana, he is omnipresent and an able administrator of Yama Dharmaraja. He is a Divine Book-Keeper and is believed to keep a log that tracks sins and virtues committed by individuals in a heavenly database called ‘Akashic’ Records.

Chitra Pournami is the day to connect deeply with Chitragupta, perform Chitra Pournami Pooja, invoke his blessings, seek forgiveness for sins, and perform sacred rituals to eradicate the bad karma in one’s life. You can attain liberation from your negative karma by balancing your bad karma through powerful remedial measures.

Chita Pournami Pooja Procedure

On the auspicious day of Chitra Pournami, people clean their homes the previous day. They wake up early and observe a holy bath before sunrise. Beautiful Maakolams depicting Chitragupta with pen and paper are created, or Padi Kolam with the south side open as the entrance to Chitragupta is made. They then offer prayers to Lord Satyanarayana (Vishnu) and observe fasting. Satyanarayana Katha Parayanam takes place. Satyanarayana Pooja is performed. Finally, they offer flowers, camphor and incense to the deity. Nivedhyam of 9 varieties of grains in a Moram, Sweet Pongal and Pongal without salt, Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai, Raw Mango Pachadi, Panakam and Neer Mor are offered to the deity.

Significance of Chitra Pournami

According to mythology, Yama Dharmaraja once complained to Lord Brahma, Creator of the Universe, about his difficulties in performing his duties of keeping records of the deeds of individuals and rendering justice to them. He requested Brahma to appoint an able assistant to help him maintain records. Lord Brahma meditated for thousands of years, and Chitragupta emerged from him on Pournami in the Tamil month of Chithrai. Chitra Pournami is celebrated as his birthday. Chitragupta is called ‘Kayastha’ as he emerged from Lord Brahma’s body (Kaya). Propitiating Chitragupta on this auspicious day can reduce one’s karmic baggage, gain insight to engage in good karma, and grant relief from the consequences of bad karma

According to the Matsya Purana, Chitragupta is the Adhi Devata of Kethu. For those under the influence of Kehu, it can be favourable to propitiate Chitragupta on Chitra Pournami.
