What Is Gau Daan?
Although there are several forms of Daan, Gau Daan or cow donation is considered the most sacred of all donations that one can do in a lifetime. According to Puranic texts, donating a cow can liberate you and your Pitrus from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly during one’s lifetime. As per Bhavishya Purana, ‘Gho or Gau Daan’ is considered a virtuous act that can grant all the benefits for a contented life and also believed to reserve a place for the giver in heaven after death.
Significance Of Gau Daan
According to Garuda Purana, a cow can carry am Atman beyond the three kinds of hells and resolve all kinds of sins committed in the present and previous Janma. This sacred text also mentions that the Atman has to cross a river called ‘Vaitharini,’ which stinks unbearably. Gau Daan can help your ancestral souls cross this river easily by holding to the tail of the holy cow, which houses all Gods and Goddesses.

- Kurma Purana states that Gau Daan is considered the most compassionate form of donation and can bless with wealth, health, and abundance
- As per Garuda Purana, cow donation can help a departed soul to cross the ‘Vaitarini River’ easily by holding to the tail of the cow.
- Skanda Purana lists cow donation as one of the meritorious donations one can make in a person’s lifetime
- According to Mahabharata, there is no Daan higher in value than Gau Daan. Donating a cow is believed to bless and protect the entire family and future generations of the donor
