What Is Karthigai Deepam?
Karthigai Deepam or Deepam festival is a light festival celebrated during the evening of Karthigai Full Moon (mid-Nov to mid-Dec). It is celebrated for Shiva and Muruga. The lighting of lamps on this day holds a deep philosophical meaning behind it. The wick in the lamp represents our ego. The oil in the lamp signifies our innate nature that builds up the ego. The flame symbolizes the spiritual wisdom that can inflame the ego (wick) by burning out the inborn behavior (oil). On the Karthigai Deepam festival, people light lamps in their houses to usher in auspiciousness and prosperity & remove any negativities and evil forces in their lives.
Why Is Karthigai Deepam Celebrated?
According to Shiva Purana, it is the auspicious day when Shiva appeared as divine fire to end the duel between Brahma and Vishnu. Once, Vishnu and Brahma were quarreling as to who was greater among them. To show his supremacy and end their fight, Shiva appeared as a huge pillar of light (fire) and challenged them to find the top and bottom of the fire column. While Brahma assumed the form of a swan and flew to find the fire’s starting point, Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug into the earth to find the bottom of the pillar. However, their efforts went futile, and both agreed that Shiva is the Supreme Being. It is believed that Shiva emerged as a huge pillar of fire at Mount Arunachala on the Deepam festival.
