Andal undertook a religious vow called ‘Paavai Nombu’ (ritual of fasting) in the month of Margazhi, during which she composed thirty divine verses in praise of Vishnu which were compiled together as Thiruppavai. Andal recited the Thiruppavai daily in the predawn hours of Margazhi, expressing her desire to serve Vishnu and be united with him.
