The name Hayagriva consists of two words. ‘Haya’ meaning ‘horse’ and ‘Griva’ meaning ‘neck.’ This is the horse- necked avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu. Hayagriva is a lesser-known incarnation, but none the less, he is an important deity in the Vaishnava tradition and is worshipped as the bestower of knowledge and wisdom and the Guru of Goddess Saraswati.
