When you build or buy a new house, it is considered auspicious to perform a Griha Pravesh or house warming ceremony while taking possession of the premises. Poojas and Homas (Fire Prayers) are performed to invoke the divine blessings, minimize any ill effects of planets and drive away evil forces. Griha Pravesh is done at a propitious time to welcome auspiciousness and divine blessings to your new premises.
Unique Traits of Griha Pravesh
Types of House warming rituals:
Apoorva – Ceremony for a newly constructed house on a fresh plot of land
Sapoorva - Entering a house after a long stay abroad or elsewhere or entering into a resold house
Dwandwah – Entering a house after repair or renovation, rectifying the damage caused by natural or unnatural calamities
Important procedures to be followed:
On the day of the Griha Pravesh ceremony, the owner along with his spouse and children should stay overnight
The house should be well illuminated, while also keeping windows and doors open for proper ventilation
It is not considered auspicious to conduct the house warming ceremony when the lady of the house is pregnant
The position of the Sun plays a pivotal role concerning the time and day of conducting the Griha Pravesh Pooja. The time considered most auspicious is when the Sun moves towards the northern direction or Uttarayana, i.e., to the sign Capricorn and the rays of the Sun fall in the eastern and north direction. Hence the Uttarayana period is recommended for performing Griha Pravesh.
Our Vedic astrologers and priests study the horoscope of the house owner thoroughly before fixing an auspicious time and day to conduct the ceremony.
A set of ceremonies are performed on the Griha Pravesh to receive divine blessings:
Gho Pooja – performed to invoke the blessings of Kamadhenu, the divine bovine goddess
Ganapati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati Pooja is performed to sanctify the threshold
Ganapati Homa - performed to remove obstacles
Navagraha Homa – performed to appease the nine planets and invoke their blessings
Lakshmi Homa – performed for health, wealth, and prosperity
The owner while entering the new house/office observes the following procedure:
The woman of the house should enter the house placing her right foot first while carrying a pot of water
Then, her husband follows her in carrying a photo of Gods
The children of the household enter the house carrying various groceries that represent prosperity
Finally, other relatives and guests enter the house
After the completion of all the Homas, the family members take the blessings of the priest with due respect and reverence. The priest is then offered food, and after he has had his fill, the family members and guests partake of the eatables. All guests are then offered token gifts while leaving the premises.
