What is Venna Kappu?
Vennai or venna is butter, a dairy product obtained from the milk of mammals like cows and buffalos. Kappu can be said to have different meanings in different contexts, and here the word can be taken to mean “applying or covering with.” Venna Kappu is thus the ritual of applying all over and covering or decorating the idol of the deity with a coat of butter.
What is an abishekam (hydration ceremony)?
An abishekam is the holy bath given to a deity. This is the sacred hydration ceremony performed for inviting divine energies into our lives. It is a simple but highly effective purification process. Such a ritual is performed to the deities, who themselves are the embodiments of purity, only because this remains the most practical means of purifying our own souls.
How is an abishekam with Venna Kappu done and what are the benefits of doing it?
Venna Kappu (that is, covering the idol of the deity and decorating him or her with butter) is a traditional form of worship that is performed to various deities for propitiating them. It is often done for Lord Hanuman. But here, Lord Vishnu remains the presiding deity of this Venna Kappu ritual. Vishnu is the God of preservation, the Lord who protects and sustains the universe. One among the holy trinity of supreme Gods, he is said to be the physical manifestation of spiritual consciousness. He guards all the living beings on Earth and blesses the devotees with a long life, prosperity, peace, happiness and success. In this worship, a coat of butter paste is applied ceremonially on the idol of Lord Vishnu, and he is well-decorated. Then an abishekam is performed to him, followed by a pooja.
This remedy shall please the great Lord, get his divine blessings for the devotees and bestow them with welfare, good health and success.
