‘Sri Rudram’ is a sacred hymn from the Vedas, dedicated as a prayer to archetype Rudra, a form of Shiva, to transform from his fierce form to peaceful form and receive his blessings. This prayer has two parts, each of which is divided into eleven sections. The first part has verses ending with the term “Nama,” and hence this part is named ‘Namakam’ or ‘Rudram.’ The second part is named ‘Chamakam’ as the verses end with “Cha Me” which means “let this be granted to me.”
According to legend, the mentally conceived daughter of Agnishvattas, one of the seven classes of the divine Pitrus, yearned for a mortal father. This weakened her Yogic powers and sent her hurtling down from Heaven. While descending, she passed the Pitru Loka (world dedicated to ancestors) and appealed to them to save her. The Pitrus advised her to be born to King Amavasya. In due course, she regained her powers and conducted a ceremony to the Pitrus to express her gratitude. Thus performing Amavasya Tarpanam ritual on the New Moon Day can feed the souls of your departed forefathers, who can, in turn, shower their blessings on you.
The purpose of Laghu Rudra homa is to propitiate the eleven powerful forms of Rudra (Shiva) and offer prayers to the Supreme seeking for removal of sins and fulfillment of your earnest wishes. According to sacred texts, chanting Rudram during the fire prayer can bring archetype Rudra to his peaceful state, and chanting Chamakam can submit our prayers and fulfill of wishes.
