According to Vedic calculations, a Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar when the Moon is placed at 12 degrees east from the Sun.
A Tithi or date represents one full day of a lunar month and is considered to be an essential element in a Panchang. It is the Tithi or date that determines the occurrence of special days, festivals and anniversaries, among others. The Hindu festivals and ceremonies are marked based on the Tithi Calendar.
A lunar month consists of 30 dates (Tithis). This occurs between Krishna Paksha (waning phase) and Shukla Paksha (waxing phase).
The first fifteen days come under the Shukla Paksha, and the next fifteen days come under the Krishna Paksha. A Tithi is divided into five elements called Nanda, Bhadra, Rikta, Jaya, and Purna. Conversely, when the Moon progresses by 180 degrees, it is known as Pournami or Full Moon. When the Moon reverses by 360 degrees, it is called Amavasya.
