Legend of Ardhanarishvara
According to the Puranas, Sage Bhringi, an ardent devotee of Shiva, refused to worship him along with Parvati. Shiva then merged with Parvati and they became one united entity. Ardhanarishvara represents the Holy union of the masculine and feminine aspects of the Universe in equal parts, reflected in the inseparable aspect of the Divine Couple, Shiva, and Parvati. This unity leads to a harmonious association of co-existence, helps attain enlightenment, and the ability to handle challenges, overcome adversity, and maintain the balance of the Universe.
