He was also one of the 63 Shaivite saints called Nayanmars, and his parents are also part of the 63 saints. He was called Nambiyarurar at birth, but was affectionately called “Thampiran Thozhan” (Comrade of Lord Shiva) and “Vanthondan” (the argumentative follower). According to local legends associated with Sundarar’s life, he was an attendant of Lord Shiva and went by the name Alala Sundararan. Sundarar composed 3800 hymns, which are contained in the collected works of Thirumurai, called “Thiruppattu.” By rendering these hymns, Sundarar is believed to have performed many miracles. According to Temple lore, the Chola king sought Sundarar’s help to bring rains to his kingdom and remove famine from the land. Sundarar agreed on the condition that 12 acres of land be donated to the Thirupunkoor Temple. He succeeded in his task and obtained 12 more acres as he had to render another hymn to stop the rains. At another Temple in Avinashi, Sundarar rendered his hymn and resurrected an eight-year-old boy who died after being swallowed by a crocodile. Sundarar is depicted with a hand crutch and lotus flowers in both hands.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,3_4″ use_custom_gutter=”on” gutter_width=”1″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” width=”65%” width_tablet=”90%” width_phone=”90%” width_last_edited=”on|tablet” max_width=”65%” max_width_tablet=”90%” max_width_phone=”90%” max_width_last_edited=”on|desktop” module_alignment=”center” custom_padding=”||0px|||” custom_padding_tablet=”|20px||20px|false|true” custom_padding_phone=”|20px|0px|20px|false|true”][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.astroved.com/temple/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AstroVed-Temple-Manikavasagar.jpg” title_text=”AstroVed-Temple-Manikavasagar” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”|||0px|false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”|||0px|false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”|20px|||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”|0px|30px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Open Sans|600|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#8a0600″ header_2_font_size=”31px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” custom_margin=”0px||0px||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||10px||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet”]
Manikavasagar
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Open Sans||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”18px” custom_margin=”0px||10px||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|tablet”]
Manikavasagar, or Manikkavacakar is a ninth-century poet whose greatest works are collected in Tirumurai. The Nayanars emerged between the 7th and 9th centuries. They were extremely pious and were from all walks of life. They dedicated themselves to Shiva worship and composing devotional hymns, sung even today. Along with Manikkavasagar, composer of the Tirukovayar and Tiruvasakam, they are called the Samayacharyas (the teachers of faith). In Tamil, they are called the ‘Nalvar,’ meaning the four.
