This homa invokes the blessings of Mrityunjaya, one of the powerful forms of Lord Shiva. ‘Mrityu’ means death, ‘Jaya’ means vanquisher or victory, and hence, Mrityunjaya means ‘the one who vanquishes death.’ According to mythology, Lord Shiva once destroyed Yama, the Lord of death to save his ardent devotee Markandeya, and therefore hailed as ‘Mrityun Jaya.’ Participating in this homa can bestow the divine protection and, most importantly, help us overcome the fear of death while leading us to liberation (Moksha).
