Vaidhyanatha Pooja

Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamilnadu, India is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Vaidhyanatha or Vaitheeswara in this temple. “ Vaidhyanatha” means “ God of Healing” and it is believed that prayers to Vaidhyanatha can cure diseases. Vaidhyanatha or Vaitheeswara in Tamil means Vaidhya( Doctor) and Natha or Ishvara(God/Master). Lord Vaidhyanatha is the chief deity of this powerful pooja. He is the divine physician who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva,. He is often portrayed as the supreme ascetic with a passive and composed disposition. Lord Shiva is known as a destroyer among the Hindu trinity. But in this form, he is considered a doctor or savior from ailments. Here, let us learn about the Vaidhyanatha form of Lord Shiva and the benefits of performing this pooja. 

Legend

As per popular legend, Vaidhyanatha Swamy is worshipped by Pul(Jatayu), Iruku( Rigveda), and Vel was presented in this place where Vaidhyanatha is a prime deity. 

One of the nine planets, Mars suffered from Leprosy and was cured by Vaidhyanatha Swamy and from then on this temple is treated as one of the Navagraha temples. As per Legend, Angaraka( chevvai) is born from a drop of sweat that fell from the forehead of Lord Shiva during meditation. Parvati asked her son Subramanya to appear with one face instead of his usual appearance with six faces. Goddess Parvati was pleased and presented him with Vel to slay the demons. Subramanya overcame the asura Surapadma and in the war, his army was severely injured. Lord Shiva came out as Vaidhyanatha, the healer, and cured the wounds.
