Sun Pooja

Sun or Lord Surya is a Hindu God and the chief ruler of the Navagraha, the nine classical Planets of Hindu mythology, which include seven planets in the solar system as well as the Sun and Moon. Surya is the sun god and the creator of the universe. He is also known as Aditya, Surya Bhagavan, and Suraya. He is the major deity in the smarta tradition. He is depicted as a red man with three eyes and four arms. He is often shown being pulled in a chariot by seven horses. The Vedas assert Sun is the creator of the material universe.

Sun was during the medieval period worshipped in tandem with Brahma during the day, Shiva at noon, and Vishnu in the evening. Sun is depicted with chakra, also interpreted as Dharma chakra. Sun was the primary deity venerated by the characters of the Mahabharata and Ramayana along with Shiva. He is particularly venerated in the Saura tradition found in Indian states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharastra, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Orissa. Major festivals in reverence for the Sun include Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Samba Dhasami, Ratha Saptami, and Chaath Pooja.

Significance of Sun

The sun is the supreme source of all life in the earth. He is the soul who brings light and warmth to the world. In some hymns of Rigveda 5.47, 6.51, and 7.63 Sun or Surya means an inanimate object or a stone or a gem in the sky while in others it refers to a personified deity. He is prominently associated with Ushas. The Sun represents life and is also known to typify energy, power, positivity, and clarity. The sun is a natural force and illuminates the world around us. It helps living creatures navigate the planet and sustains many essential ecosystems. Sun god is the son of Sage Kashyap and Aditi.

The other name of Sun is Aditya. Arka, Bhanu, Savitr, Pushan, Ravi, Martanda, Mitr, Bhhaskara, Prabhakara, Kathiravan, Vivasvan. The Vedas assert the Sun to be the creator of the material universe( Prakriti). Sun or Surya is one of the several trinities along with Vayu, Agni, and Indra. Upanishads state Sun is linked to the power of sight, visual perception, and knowledge.

The Savitr refers to one that rises and sets, Aditya means one with splendor, Mitra refers to the Sun as “ the great luminous friend of mankind” while Pushan refers to the Sun as an illuminator that helps Devas win over Asuras who use darkness.

Puranic Significance

As per Ramayana’s Yuddha Kanda, Rama was taught Aditya Hrudhayam stotra before his war against Ravana. This Stotra was composed in Anushtup Chandas in praise of the Sun god. He is described as the embodiment of all gods and the origin of everything in the universe. The Brihat Samhita of Varaha Mihira states that the Sun is shown with two hands and wearing a crown. In Vishnudarmottara, another Hindu text shows him with four hands, a flower in two hands, a staff in the third, and in fourth with writing equipment.

Sun Pooja

The Sun or Surya is more than a light in the sky. It gives life, energy, and balance to our world. In astrology and spiritual beliefs, especially in India, the Sun is a powerful symbol. Sun Pooja is a special practice in the Vedic sphere where people honor the Sun, also known as Surya. It’s a way to connect with and thank the Sun for its powerful and positive energy.

During Sun Pooja, people follow certain steps to respect the Sun. They clean their worship space, say special words or chants, and give offerings like flowers or food. All these actions are meant to draw in good energy, health, and prosperity from the Sun.

The Sun, seen as a bright protector in the sky, is believed to shield people from harm and negativity. Through the Pooja, individuals invite the Sun’s blessed light into their lives, hoping it will guide and protect them.

Sun Pooja isn’t just about the rituals. It's a spiritual connection, a way to invite the Sun’s divine energy into our lives, lighting up our path with its warm and positive glow.
