Saraswathi Pooja

Saraswathi also called Sarasvati, is a Hindu goddess, of Knowledge, music, flowing water, abundance and wealth, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. She is one of the Tridevi, along with the goddess Lakshmi and Parvati. She is also revered in Jainism and Buddhism.

The earliest mention of Saraswathi as a goddess is in the Rigveda. She has remained significant as a goddess from the Vedic period till today’s modern period. Saraswathi is a fusion of the Sanskrit word “ Saras” which means “ Pooling water” or is sometimes translated as “Speech”. Originally associated with the river Saraswathi, this name, therefore, means” She who has ponds, lakes or pooling water” or “ She who possesses speech”.It is also a Sanskrit word for “Surasa –vati” which means “ one with plenty of water”.

Saraswathi is known by many names. Her other names are Brahmani( Power of Brahma); Brahmi( Goddess of sciences); Bharadi( Goddess of History); Vani and Vachi( Both referring to the flow of music); Varnesvari( goddess of letters); Kavijhivagravasini( one who dwells on the tongue of poets); other names are Ambika, Bharati, Chandrika, Devi, Gomati, Hamsasana, Saudamini, Shvetambara, Subhadra, Vaishnavi, Vasudha, Vidya, Vidyarupa, and Vindhyavasini.

She is depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in white and seated on a white lotus which symbolizes purity and knowledge, adorned with a mala of crystals alongside a flowing body of water.

She is generally depicted with four arms which hold four symbols: a book, a rosary, a water pot, and a musical instrument called the veena. With a Veena in her hand and a pot of water beside her, she is portrayed with a swan as her carrier. All these traits represent true knowledge and wisdom through which peace and harmony are attained.

She is said to reside in the words spoken by people, songs sung by nightingales, in the hands of the sculptor, in songs and the voices of singers, the hearts of poets, the sweet language of parrots, paintings, handicrafts, cultural performances, dances and all other forms of art.

The festival of Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of spring, also known as Saraswati Pooja is celebrated in her honor. Goddess Saraswati is the Goddess of Learning, who is divine knowledge personified. The sound of her Celestial Veena awakens the notes of sublime utterances of the sacred monosyllable, “OM”.
