Muruga is the Warrior God. This Divine son of Shiva and Parvati remains one of the most popular and widely worshiped divinities, especially in the state of Tamil Nadu and southern parts of India. Muruga is also called by many other names, such as Skanda, Karthikeya, Saravana, Subrahmanya, and Shanmukha, and people seek his blessings to develop courage, destroy evil forces, overcome debts, resolve real estate problems, and enjoy good health. Vedic astrology regards Muruga as the overlord of Mars, the fiery malefic planet, which can affect a person's life in many ways; hence, it is believed that propitiating Muruga can help mitigate the adverse impact of Mars and strengthen its beneficial effects.
Muruga Pooja, Murugan Pooja (Murugan Puja), or Lord Murugan Pooja, is the ceremonial worship done to this mighty God, seeking his Divine blessings for all-around welfare.
Skanda Purana and other legends speak elaborately about the advent of Muruga. Demon Tarakasura, protected by an amazing boon that his end could happen only through a son born to Shiva, took himself to be invincible, started terrorizing the heaven and inflicting unspeakable cruelty on Gods, celestial beings, and saints. Badly harassed by the demonic forces, they all sought Shiva's intervention and sent the Fire God Agni asking for Shiva's help.
Agni found Shiva in a cosmic embrace with his consort, Goddess Parvati. Understanding why Agni rushed to them, Parvati gave Shiva's seed to him, which Agni gratefully accepted and swallowed. But unable to withstand the intensity of its heat, Agni dropped it in the river Ganges. While Ganges held on to the seed, it separated into six seed forms, from which emerged six babies. Six of the seven stars of Krittika, the Pleiades constellation, assumed human, feminine forms and nurtured the six babies. But they had to face the ire of their husbands, the sages, who started doubting their loyalty, and that made them float the babies in the Ganges itself. But they landed in the hands of Parvati while she was taking a bath, and she took them on her lap and united them into a single entity, an extremely handsome, Divine baby boy. She soon realized that he was none other than the one who emerged from Shiva's seed and accepted the charming boy as her son. As he was six babies united into one, he had six faces and was called Arumuga (m), the six-faced divinity.
Muruga was extremely good-looking, intelligent, and powerful, even as a little boy. Soon, he set out to fulfill the purpose of his incarnation, the destruction of the demonic forces led by Tarakasura. Mother Parvati also bestowed him with a Vel, a divinely powerful lance. Armed with this potent weapon and assuming the role of the commander of the celestial army of the Devas, he took on the mighty Tarakasura, his brother Surapadman, and other Asuras. In the fierce battle that ensured, Muruga fought the demons heroically for six days and finally uprooted them all, relieving the Gods and the Devas of their oppression.
This 6th Day of Muruga's ultimate triumph is commemorated as Soorasamharam, and this Day of his resounding Victory is celebrated as the Grand Festival Skanda Shasti.
Muruga is a unique Godhead, a rare combination of supreme, Divine intelligence and matchless valor. He remains an embodiment of beauty, courage, wisdom, and the core of all Divine energies and is believed to lead one towards spiritual evolution. Muruga is regarded as a Tamil God and is widely worshipped by the Tamil people in the country and worldwide.
Muruga is inseparable from his weapon, Vel, which he is seen holding majestically in his hand. This Vel (spear), which his mother, Goddess Parvati, gifted him, is a psychic weapon filled with the powers of the Goddess to instill fear and panic in the hearts of demonic forces. This Vel itself is regarded as a divinity, worshiped with much reverence by Muruga devotees.
It is believed that worshiping this Divine warrior can earn his blessings, which can eliminate obstacles and fulfill desires.
Muruga is a benevolent God whose blessings can benefit all devotees. Muruga worship can be particularly beneficial to those seeking to regain a good physique and robust energy and maintain sound health, resolve litigations, property, and debt-related issues, overcome the adverse effects of an unfavorably placed Mars or Mars affliction, and those born in the stars Dhanishta, Chitra, and Mrigshirsha.
Muruga Pooja can also be very effective on Shasti Thithi (the 6th Waxing Moon), Krittika, and Vishaka star Days and Tuesdays.
Expert and experienced priests perform Muruga Pooja, Murugan Pooja (Murugan Puja), or Lord Murugan Pooja, adhering to the guidelines prescribed in the scriptures, chanting Muruga Mantras, and imploring him for his Divine grace.
According to the scriptures, Muruga Pooja can bestow Muruga's grace to gain strength and vitality and lead a peaceful life. It can also relieve negative energies responsible for diseases, debts, and litigation, safeguard against evil eyes, curses, and negative influences, help overcome enemies, subdue an agitated mind, and bless with success in undertakings, especially real estate, and qualities for maintaining happy relationships. It can also earn the grace of Muruga's Vel (spear), the Divine tool that can destroy Karma, negative thoughts, and mindset gathered over many lifespans.
Murugan Pooja can also activate the pineal gland in the brain, otherwise known as 'the third eye,' and beneficially impart the powers of intelligence, wisdom, and intuition and help acquire supernormal abilities.
