The Moon governs the mind and emotions. While it is a natural satellite of the earth that keeps orbiting our planet, astrologically, it remains one of the Navagraha, the nine planets. Being the closest heavenly body to the earth, it is believed to have a tremendous influence on people's lives and hence is regarded as a very significant planet. He is also known as Chandra and is referred to respectfully as the Moon God. It is believed that an auspiciously placed Moon at a person's birth can bestow him with a stable mind, positive emotions, clarity of thought, and creativity.
Moon Pooja (Moon Puja) or Chandra Pooja (Chandra Puja) is the ceremonial worship performed in honor of Chandra, our nearest celestial neighbor.
There are numerous legends about the Moon, elaborating on his birth and exploits. The story about the Moon's origin is quite interesting. According to mythology, Chandra emerged from the cosmic ocean of milk when it was churned by Devas, the celestials, and Asuras, the demons, to obtain Amrut, the Divine nectar. As the Universal Mother Mahalakshmi is also said to have come out with him, the Moon is considered her brother and fondly called 'Chanda Mama.' However, another Purana calls him the son of Sage Atri and his spouse Anusuya, thanks to the Supreme Creator Brahma's blessings.
Another legend speaks about the Moon marrying all the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapathi, who denote the 27 Nakshatras, the stars, recognized by our astrology. But the Moon was partial towards Rohini, one of them, and so was cursed by their father, to lose his powers and brightness. However, the Moon propitiated Shiva with his penance, who then provided Chndra with some relief, and consequently, the Moon began waxing and waning for a fortnight alternatively. Shiva also accepted the crescent Moon on his matted hair and got the name Chandrashekara, the God with the Moon on his head.
While that made him a divinity, the Moon God, Chandra's brilliance raised him to the level of a planet or planetary lord and as one of the Devas, the celestials, referred to as Soma, in ancient texts.
Vedic Astrology regards the Moon as the queen of planets and Mano Karaka, the causative planet for the mind, the seat of thoughts and emotions. Chandra can create strong tides in the ocean; likewise, he can impact the human mind quite powerfully. Due to his proximity to the earth, he can determine the mental balance and emotional character of a person and can disturb or impact negatively, an individual's thought process and behavior.
Astrologically, Mother Goddess Parvati remains the presiding deity of the Moon, and her motherly characteristics also define the Moon's traits. The Moon, thus, represents the Mother and the Motherly figures, apart from mental capacity, memory power, spontaneity, creativity, and happiness.
The Moon rules over Monday, and as he is believed to be dear to Shiva, Mondays referred to as Somavara, are held Sacred for worshiping Shiva.
People who wish to acquire stability of the mind and be positive, creative, and progressive, improve peace and happiness in domestic life, develop good intuition power and increase the level of consciousness, set right their relationship with their mother, and get over health issues and enjoy good health, can invoke Moon God's blessings through Moon Pooja (Moon Puja) or Chandra Pooja (Chandra Puja) for his grace.
It may also be good to perform this Pooja, particularly on Mondays, the Weekday Moon rules, though this worship can be done any Day.
Experienced priests with expertise in such ritualistic worship perform Moon Pooja (Moon Puja) or Chandra Pooja (Chandra Puja), following the procedures laid down in Sacred texts, chanting Mantras in praise of Chandra, and appeasing him for his beneficial blessings.
According to Sacred texts, performing Pooja to Chandra or Moon God can reduce the malefic effects and strengthen the positive blessings of the Moon. It can help come to terms with a vacillating and unsettled mind and give clarity of thoughts, remove emotional imbalances and gain control over insecurities, negative outlook, and neglectful attitude, create a peaceful and stable environment at home and work, develop good decision-making skills, build good connections and have good relationships with women, strike fruitful deals in business or social network, bestow prosperity, success, and happiness and enjoy good family life.
