Mercury

Mercury is the planet of intellect. According to Vedic Astrology, Mercury is an auspicious planet, regarded as the youngest and wisest of Navagraha, the 9 planets. Also known as Budha, it represents intelligence, knowledge, and wealth, and it denotes how one makes sense of the world, originates ideas, and communicates them with others. It is believed that a well-placed Mercury at the time of birth of an individual, reflected in the natal chart, can improve the person's thinking capability, communication skills, idea formulation, strategy planning, and execution.

Mercury Pooja (Mercury Puja) or Budha Pooja (Budha Puja) is the ceremonial worship performed in honor of this mighty planetary lord.

Mercury in Mythology

There are references to Budha, planet Mercury, in many ancient texts such as Vishnu Purana, Brahma Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Devi Bhagavata, Padma Purana, and Vayu Purana and the earliest of these occurs in the Vedic and Sacred texts such as Panchavimsa Brahmana and Shatapatha Brahmana.

According to many of these, Mercury was born to Chandra, the Moon, and Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, the Jupiter, where the Moon and Jupiter themselves are counted among the planets in Vedic astrology.

The Significance of Mercury

Mercury is hailed as Buddhi Karaka, the causative planet or ruler of intelligence; hence, it is called Budha. Vedic Astrology represents Mercury as a prince and regards it as the wisdom planet, signifying sagacity, sound judgment, intuition, and presentation skills.

But if there is one aspect Mercury is closely associated with apart from intellect, it can only be the celebrated ability of communication. Vedic Astrology holds that a favorably disposed Mercury can grant excellent verbal and written communication skills and powerful speaking and oratorical capabilities. It can also bestow a keen sense of humor, sharp wit, clarity of thought, an eye for detail, sound analytical skills, and the right sense of discrimination. It can also provide business acumen and proficiency in fields like commerce, accounting, mathematics, logic, astrology, sales, and research.

Vishnu is the overlord of Mercury, which rules Wednesday.
