Ketu is the descending lunar node in Vedic astrology. Personified as deities, Rahu and Ketu are considered to be two halves of the immortal Asura Svarbhanu who was beheaded by Lord Vishnu in his Mohini Avatar. As per Vedic Astrology, Rahu and Ketu have an orbital cycle of 18 years and are always 180 degrees from each other orbitally. Ketu is the lord of three nakshatras, Ashvini, Maga, and Mula.

Ketu rules the Scorpio Zodiac sign together with Mangala. Ketu is called south lunar nodes. Ketu is believed to be responsible for causing the lunar eclipse. Puranic Connection

According to Puranas, during Samudra Mandana, Maha Vishnu took the avatar of Mohini dispensing Amrita the nectar of immortality among Devas. When Amrita was being dispensed among Devas, Sveta Banu, an asura, transformed himself into Lord Chandra and sat in Deva's row. He was also offered Amrita and Sun and Moon discovered the truth. But by that time Sveta Banu drank Amrita. With the luminaries calling alarm, Maha Vishnu threw his discus at the Asura and cut off his head. As the Asura already drunk Amrita the head and body were both immortal only separated and the head with serpent body was called Rahu and the serpent head and human body became Ketu.
