Goddess Durga

Durga is a powerful Goddess. She is a dynamic form of Shakti, the Universal feminine force and the consort of Shiva, the Supreme God of Dissolution. She is revered as a warrior Goddess fighting and annihilating evils and demonic forces that threaten Dharma (righteousness), virtue, peace, and prosperity. She is only the fierce form of the protective Mother Goddess, always ready to unleash her anger against the vice and the wrong for destruction and liberation to empower creation. This Universal Mother is the creative energy that operates decisively against the negative forces of evil and wickedness.

Goddess Durga is also the presiding deity of the malefic shadow planet Rahu, the northern node of the Moon, and can control its adverse effects and help amplify its beneficial influence.

Goddess Durga Pooja is the ceremonial worship done to this mighty divinity, seeking her powerful protection and Divine blessings.

Portrayal of Goddess Durga

Durga is a Divine warrior who represents the power of the Supreme Being to preserve moral order and righteousness in creation. She is depicted accordingly, as a fearless woman with eight or ten arms carrying a variety of weapons and riding a lion or a tiger. Many portrayals also show her as slaying the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura.

Goddess Durga protects humanity from evil and misery and destroys the negativity in our psyche. Though her demeanor is fierce and terrifying, she is benevolent and nurturing to her devotees.

The Mythology behind Goddess Durga

Mahishasura, the demon with the head of a buffalo, did severe penance towards Lord Shiva and obtained incredible boons, one of which protected him from being killed by anyone other than a woman. Considering himself to be invincible and hence immortal, Mahishasura let loose his reign of terror on heaven and earth, subjecting the celestials and human beings to untold miseries.

The Gods then took refuge in the Supreme Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, who then combined their Divine energies and created a feminine form to take on the rampaging Mahishasura. That marked the advent of Durga, beautiful yet fierce. The Gods bestowed her with many Divine weapons created out of their energy, and she set out to take on Mahishasura, carrying these weapons in her many hands and riding a lion.

After annihilating the demonic forces and slaying his henchmen, Goddess engaged Mahishasura in direct combat and, after a bloody battle, overcame his might and slew him by piercing his body with her trident, thus reliving the universe of his terrible oppression.

The much-relieved worlds hailed her as Mahishasura Mardhini, the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. According to legends, her battle with the Asuras lasted nine days and nights, and she ultimately overpowered the demon king on the 10th lunar phase of Dasami. People celebrate these nine days of battle as Navaratri in honor of the Goddess and the 10th Day of her ultimate victory as Vijayadasami.
