Once, on being separated from goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva was performing penance. During this time, a drop of sweat from his third eye (eye in the middle of forehead) fell on the ground and took the form of a child. This child was nurtured and brought up by goddess Earth, who grew up to become Lord Mars.
While Lord Mars was deeply involved in meditation, a spiritual flame appeared on his body and elevated him to the status of a planet.
There is also another mythology regarding the birth of Lord Mars. Once, Saint Bharadwaj was returning home from his usual bath in the river when he set his eyes on a young girl. He was irresistibly drawn towards the young girl and he discharged a seminal fluid that took the form of a child. Goddess Earth brought up the child and subsequently sent him to Saint Bharadwaj for learning various arts. Thereupon, the child grew up and attained the status of a planet.
