Mythology Behind Archetype Sun

According to the mythology, Sage Kashyap and his wife Aditi gave birth to 12 sons or Adityas. Of them, Lord Brahma chose Savita and blessed him that all the other Adityas will be merged with him and will be worshipped as a single Aditya or the Sun. Since these 12 Adityas exert different forces; there are twelve months in a year with different seasons and climatic conditions.

Lord Sun or Surya has been mentioned in the great Hindu epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata. In the Ramayana, Lord Rama is depicted as a descendant of the Surya dynasty. Surya is said to be the father of King Sugriva who helped Rama to slay the demon king Ravana.

According to Mahabharata, Kunti received a sacred mantra as a boon from sage Durvasa, that by chanting the mantra she could beckon any Deva and bear a child. Kunti wanted to test the mantra and called for Lord Surya when she inexplicably begot Karna as her child with Surya.
