Skanda Sashti is celebrated on the sixth day of the lunar month as per the Tamil calendar. It is also known as Kanda Shashti, and it is one of the most important days that is majorly celebrated in Tamil Nadu and other South India regions.

The day is dedicated to the God of War, Lord Muruga, also known as Karthikey. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati; Lord Muruga is known for defeating the demon Surapadma and exemplifying that goodness always wins over evil.

Thus to celebrate the victory of Lord Skanda, people observe fast on this day and worship the Lord with all the rituals. It is considered that by worshipping Lord Skanda, he blesses the devotees with prosperity, happiness, and prestige.

The Mythology Behind Lord Skanda

Skanda Sashti

Lord Skanda or Karthikey was created by Lord Shiva to defeat all the demon kings and their demon army as per the Hindu scriptures. Tarakasura, along with Simhamukha and Surapadma, was creating havoc in heaven. They created their army of demons and made the God-likes leave heaven.

It was getting more and more difficult to control the demon kings. That is where all the God-likes or Devatas approached Lord Shiva and requested him to defeat the demons. Lord Shiva then came out of his Samadhi, and he created Lord Skanda with his third eye.

Upon creation, Goddess Parvati and all other Devas blessed him with different powers and weaponry to fight the demons.

The fight then went on for six days, and in all these days, Lord Skanda defeated every demon king and freed the heaven from their confinement. Since that day, to celebrate this victory, devotees worship the Lord and become grateful for the Godly act.
