What is Karthigai Nakshatra?

Karthigai Nakshatra (Star), also known as Kritika Nakshatra is the third star of the 27 Nakshatras and is ruled by the Lord Surya (Sun). The Star has Lord Agni (Fire) and Lord Muruga as its presiding deities. Kritika means “cutters” or “Critical” and symbolizes destruction of negativities and impurities. The characteristics of the star dominate femininity rather than masculinity.

Karthigai Nakshatra is considered highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Muruga. According to Skanda Purana, Lord Muruga was born from the Third eye of Lord Shiva in the form of 6 flames. Agni and Vayu Devas carried the flames to Karthigai Pengal to nurture the babies. Once they attained boyhood, Goddess Parvati united them to a single boy with 6 faces. This gave Lord Muruga the name “Shanmuga”. Goddess Parvati blessed Karthigai Pengal (six maidens) with a boon that special rituals or Poojas will be held on Karthigai Nakshatra for Lord Muruga.
