Introduction to Krishna Paksha Ashtami

The eighth day of the lunar phase is known as Ashtami. This day on the waning period of the Moon is known as Krishna Paksha Ashtami.

Significance of Krishna Paksha Ashtami

Krishna Paksha Ashtami

Krishna Paksha Ashtami is the 23rd Tithi (lunar day) and is also known as “Kala Ashtami” as Kala Bhairava, the fierce form of Lord Shiva is the ruling deity of the day. Also known as Vairavar in Tamil, Bhairava is a manifestation of Shiva's anger. Worshipping Bhairava on waning Ashtami Tithi can remove bad karma, negative energies, and vibrations in your life. Appeasing the God shall also ensure confidence and determination in mind. Generally, the day is not considered auspicious to start any new venture, education, marriage, construction or travel. The best activity to be performed on this day is to worship Lord Kala Bhairava and feed stray dogs. Krishna Paksha Ashtami during the month of Margashirsha (Nov – Dec) is considered most auspicious and is called as ‘Kala Bhairava Jayanthi.’

Rituals of Krishna Paksha Ashtami

Devotees of Bhairava begin the day with an early bath and perform special Pooja for Kala Bhairava to gain his blessings. People also observe strict Vrat (fasting) for the whole day to receive happiness, peace and prosperity blessings. Visiting Kala Bhairava temples and chanting mantras in praise of him can appease the lord. Feeding stray dogs is considered beneficial, as dog is regarded as the vehicle of Kala Bhairava.
