The month of December denotes the twelfth month of the Gregorian calendar. December retains its name from the Latin word ‘Decem’ meaning ten, as it was originally the tenth month in the calendar of Romulus. Later, January and February were added to the Roman calendar. December signifies the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere.

India is a country with a divergent population comprising of numerous religions, cultures, communities, languages, traditions, and customs. The festivals celebrated across the country are diverse and reflect the rich and vibrant culture, history, and traditions of the country.

In accordance with the Hindu calendar, most festivals are celebrated based on the position of the Sun and the Moon. The festivals also defer according to the region and have different time zones. Most festivals include some significant days of fasting.

The last month of the year is refreshing and pleasant. Its vacation time and the festival season too. Some festivals like Karthigai Deepam falls on the Full Moon day (Purnima) in the month of Kartika (mid-November to mid-December). It is a festival of lights observed by Hindus. Another important festival is Christmas, an annual festival celebrated by Christians to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a religious as well as a cultural festival celebrated by non-Christians too.
