April is known as the fourth month of the year and the first month to have 30 days. April is derived from the Latin word ‘Aperio,’ meaning ‘to open.’ Plants begin to grow, and flowers begin to bloom. The sky is clear, and greenery can be seen everywhere.

India is a country with a divergent population comprising of numerous religions, cultures, communities, languages, traditions, and customs. The festivals celebrated across the country are diverse and reflect the rich and vibrant culture, history, and traditions of the country.

In accordance with the Hindu calendar, most festivals are celebrated based on the position of the Sun and the Moon. The festivals also defer according to the region and have different time zones. Most festivals include some significant days of fasting.

Important festivals this month include ‘Baisakhi,’ the harvest festival that celebrates the Punjabi New Year and founding of the Khalsa (Sikh brotherhood). The month also celebrates ‘Vishu’ in Kerala, Tulu region in Karnataka, and Mahe district of Union Territory of Puducherry. The festival marks the Sun’s transit into the Meda Raasi (first solar month). ‘Puthandu’ or the Tamil New Year’s Day marks the first day of the year in the Tamil calendar, in the month of Chithirai. It is a highly significant festival celebrated by Tamilians.
