Introduction to Bhauma Pradosham

Pradosham is an auspicious 3-hour period, 1.5 hours before and after the sunset, and is celebrated twice a month on the 13th day of every fortnight. The day is considered ideal for the worship of Lord Shiva and Nandi (bull). When a Pradosham falls on a Tuesday, it is called Bhauma Pradosham.

Significance of Bhauma Pradosham

Bhauma Pradosham

The Sanskrit term ‘Bhauma’ denotes the planet Mars and hence, the 13th lunar phase on a Tuesday, the ruling day of Mars, is called as Bhauma Pradosham. According to legends, planetary God Mars or Mangal performed severe penance to Lord Shiva and was bestowed with Mangal Loka - Mars’ abode or kingdom. Hence, it is believed that appeasing Lord Shiva on a Bhauma Pradosham can fulfill all your wishes and gain you his graceful blessings. A Pradosham on a Tuesday is also called ‘Runa Vimochana Pradosham’.

‘Runa’ means debts ‘Vimochana’ means relief; hence, worshipping Lord Shiva on a Runa Vimochana Pradosham can dissolve your negative debt karma and provide lucrative opportunities in life.

Rituals of Bhauma Pradosham Vrat (Fasting)

On a Bhauma Pradosham, devotees begin the day with an early bath and observe the fasting from sunrise to sunset. Some people observe a strict fast, and some observe partial fasting by just consuming milk and fruits. Special Pooja (rituals of worship) is performed for Lord Shiva and his mount Nandi (bull) during the Pradosham timing (4:30 PM to 6 PM) at temples and houses. Devotees chant sacred mantras of Lord Shiva during the Pooja, offer special dishes (Prasad) and perform Aarti (light offering). Devotees break the fast by consuming the Pooja Prasad. Some people also donate red colored clothes, masoor dal (red lentils), jaggery (cane sugar), etc.
