Satyanarayana Pooja is highly popular worship dedicated to Lord Narayana. People from many parts of the country undertake this special worship for propitiating the Lord and seeking his mercy and blessings. Narayana is none other than Vishnu, the supreme God of protection, while Satya is Dharma or truth. Satyanarayana is an extremely benevolent form of the Lord, who can be easily pleased by sincere devotion and it is believed that his grace can fill a life with immense blessings.
As per the legend, it was none other than Lord Vishnu himself who explained about the efficacy of this pooja to sage Narada, when he mentioned to the Lord about the sufferings that people underwent in their lives and sought to know from him the means of coming out of them.
Satyanarayana Pooja involves observance of Vrat, the fasting, reading and listening to the story of Satyanarayana Katha, offering oblations to the celebrated image or picture of the deity, and offering prayers, consisting of reciting of hymns and chanting of his sacred names.
Any worship when done together by a cluster of people becomes all the more effective, and hence it is recommended that such a group Satyanarayana Pooja be performed for maximum effectiveness.
Satyanarayana Pooja can be regarded as a panacea for all ills. This powerful pooja is performed by a large number of people seeking divine blessings for sound health, wealth, education, good career prospects, progress, welfare, peace, and joy. It is also done during auspicious activities like marriages, naming of children, launching of new business ventures, house-warming ceremonies, etc. This worship is also done at times, as a form of thanksgiving for the fulfillment of long-cherished desires.
This is a unique pooja which can be performed by anyone, for any reason and on any day. However the Pournima Full Moon day is regarded as highly auspicious for performing this Pooja, and so the Satyanarayana Pooja is generally done on the Pournima days. There are also people who perform this on the sacred Ekadasi days. Devotees can also choose the auspicious Horas, the periods of time of about an hour, for doing this.

Devotees start with purifying themselves for the worship. Then they begin the Satyanarayana Pooja with a prayer to Lord Ganesha for the successful conduct of the worship and follow that with the Navagraha Pooja when ceremonial worship is offered to the 9 powerful planetary Lords. Then the principal Pooja commences by invoking Lord Satyanarayana, chanting his 1008 sacred names, reciting mantras and doing Archana with flowers. Offerings in the form of a variety of food items are also made to the deity, to be distributed and consumed as Prasad, after the Pooja.
