Most Powerful Ekadasi of the Year

There are 24 Ekadasi (11th Moons) in a year, and Vaikunta Ekadasi is the most powerful and looked forward to as many seek spiritual redemption or rescue in a place of peace from their current confusion and suffering. It is believed that if one observes Vaikunta Ekadasi, the gates to heaven are kept open when that person’s soul leaves the physical body. The soul ends its cycle of death and rebirth by attaining the ultimate salvation: freedom from this mortal coil.

Vaikunta Ekadasi falls on December 21st. This is the day when Vishnu gives you access to his Celestial abode Vaikunta, where every living being resides in complete harmony and fulfilment, and where Goddess Lakshmi resides with Vishnu with abundance and prosperity.

Why does Vishnu open the gates of Vaikunta to his devotees only once in a year?

Lord Vishnu opens the gates of heaven for those who have gone a long way to create heaven on Earth.

Whenever a calamity or destructive force threatened to wipe away peace and order from Earth, Vishnu descended to salvage our planet. Nine times he has descended to Earth in his various incarnations to protect the living beings. (Vishnu is yet to descend as Kalki, the last or tenth avatar.) So, whoever turns to him with gratitude, spreads an abundance of love, or puts forth genuine efforts to make this Earth a better place, Lord Vishnu invites them to enjoy his heavenly abode of Vaikunta.

Throw all your worries up into the air, plunge yourself into Vishnu consciousness, and dance with utter joy and happiness. Fill yourself with gratitude for Vishnu and carry on to “heal the world and make it a better place for me and for you and the entire human race.” When you do that, you actually touch his feet with reverence, and he lifts you up with his hands and embraces you.

Thereafter, spread the joy in your heart and keep enjoying abundance and prosperity.

The 10 Incarnations of Vishnu:

On this powerful day of Vishnu, AstroVed will perform the Dasavatara (the 10 incarnations of Vishnu) Fire Lab. In this fire lab all 10 incarnations as detailed below will be invoked, and prayers will be offered to them to connect with the respective energies of incarnation and gain their blessings.

Matsya Avatar: In his first incarnation, Vishnu arrived in the form of a fish in Satya/Krita Yuga to rescue this Earth from the Great Deluge (a great flood threatened to submerge Earth) when Brahma (Creator of Earth) had fallen into slumber. In the form of a fish, he could save the Vedas from being destroyed, and he handed them to Brahma for safe keeping. Worshipping the Matsya avatar helps one to be more focused, alert and fight against lethargy.

Kurma Avatar: In his second incarnation during Satya/Krita Yuga, Vishnu took the form of a turtle (kurma) to support Mount Mandara and prevent it from sinking. During the Churning of Milky Ocean, Mount Mandara was used by Devas and Asuras to churn the Ocean, but impact on the ocean was so much that Mount Mandara began to sink, so Vishnu went into the ocean as a turtle to lift it. Worshipping the Kurma avatar helps in controlling the negative aspects of the mind and gaining self-confidence.

Varaha Avatar: In his third incarnation during Satya/Krita Yuga, Vishnu took the form of a boar. The demon king Hiranyakashipu had stolen the Mother Earth. To rescue Her from grip of the demon, Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha and rescued Earth from the demon. Worshipping the Varaha avatar represents spiritual transformation that helps you rise above your ego and gain worldly wisdom. Regain control of your lost business, fame and other hurdles.

Narasimha Avatar: The Narasimha Avatar is the 4th incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Satya/Krita Yuga, and is said to be the most intense of all incarnations. Narasimha is often visualised as having a human-like torso and lower body with a lion-like face and claws. In this incarnation Lord Vishnu is in his most fierce form to fight against all evils and misfortunes and protect his devotees. The demon king Hiranyakashipu received a powerful boon from Lord Brahma: that he cannot be killed by man or animal, inside or outside his palace, during the day or night, on Earth or stars, or with any weapon. His pride grew out of dimensions, and he perpetrated torture on all holy souls. Vishnu appeared with the body of a man and the head and claws of a lion (Lord Narasimha), and placed the demon on his thighs, tearing his body at the threshold of his house and courtyard. He is an embodiment of victory over evil. Lord Narasimha is known primarily as the Great Protector who specifically defends and protects his devotees at times of need.

Vamana Avatar: In his fifth incarnation during Treta Yuga, Vishnu appeared as a dwarf priest (Vamana). A demon king Mahabali (grandson of Prahlad) had grown powerful and arrogant. As a dwarf priest (Vamana), Vishnu appeared before Mahabali and requested a gift of three feet of land, which the king gracefully granted to him. Then Vamana grew to the size of a giant, and kept one foot on land and one on the sky. The demon king realized that it was Vishnu, so he bowed his head, and Vamana kept his foot on Mahabali’s head. This granted immortality to the king, but he promised to recede to his kingdom in hell. The three worlds represent the three states of an individual: the one you think you are, the one others think you are, and the one you really are. This incarnation of Lord Vishnu emphasises the power of prayers and practices that will help one transcend from the earth plane to the heaven. Reaching heaven is being liberated from the cycle of birth and death. To reach heaven you have to come out of ego, maya and materialistic desires. Worshipping the Vamana avatar will help you overcome all difficulties and be blessed with Ashta Aishwaryam (8 kinds of wealth).

Parashuram Avatar: In his sixth incarnation during Treta Yuga, Vishnu appeared as Parashuram to avenge the Kshatriyas for their arrogance and unrighteousness. He also relieved the earth from the burden of kings who were sinful, unethical, destructive and non-pious. It is believed that he is one of the 7 immortal humans. Worshipping the Parashuram avatar will help you gain mental strength and courage to wipe away all fears, as well as earn fame and gain prosperity.

Rama Avatar: In his seventh incarnation during Treta Yuga, Vishnu was born as Rama, the son of king Dasaratha of Ayodhya. Lord Rama is a perfect epitome of virtue, and is an incomparable and indisputable warrior for mankind. He is the symbol of attraction and eternal bliss. Rama represents the divine attributes of omniscience and omnipotence. By offering prayers to Lord Rama you can dissolve your sins, gain good virtues, and also attain salvation.

Balarama Avatar: In his eighth incarnation during Dwapara Yuga, Vishnu came as Balarama. The 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Balarama and the 9th incarnation as Lord Krishna go together. Vishnu incarnated as Balarama and Krishna to protect the divine world from the demon king Kamsa. Balaram symbolizes simplicity, honesty, obedience, strength and responsibility. Worshipping the Balarama avatar will help you overcome the Rahu-Ketu afflictions, and afflictions due to snakes, as Balaram is none other than Adiseshan, King of Snakes. You will also gain strength, confidence and respect.

Krishna Avatar: In his ninth incarnation, Vishnu appeared as Lord Krishna. Krishna is full of love, beauty, knowledge, intelligence, wealth, fame, influence, power of attraction and renunciation. He plays a prominent role in Mahabharata, for which he relates his principles of life and sense of duty chronicled in Bhagavat Gita. His words are the tenets of karma yoga in Hinduism. Due to Him the good principles and purpose of life finally triumphed in the great battle. Worshipping Krishna will help you gain his blessings regarding how to be intelligent and courageous to tackle problems and emerge successful.

Kalki Avatar: Kalki is the last incarnation of Vishnu to appear at the end of the Kali Yuga to protect the world from unrighteousness and injustice. Puranas reveal that Kalki, the last avatar of Lord Vishnu, will descend on a white horse at the end of Kali Yuga. He will be full of energy, intelligence and prowess. He will wipe out unhealthy and immoral practices to help human society regain the track of righteousness.

Worshipping Kalki will help you face the problems in Kali Yuga with ease, and your lineage will be freed from vices and sins. You will win over your enemies, flourish in business, excel in educational pursuits, and live a life of abundance and fame.

Among the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Lord Vishnu plays the role of Preserver and Maintainer of Peace. To accomplish his duty, he has descended onto Earth many times. He has always protected righteousness, justice and truth to prevail in the universe. When there is a threat to such principles or values from any demonic force, Lord Vishnu descends to Earth to restore the lost order and fight against injustice.

The significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi is mentioned in Padma Purana, where Ekadasi is mentioned as the female incarnation or energy of Lord Vishnu, who slayed the demon Muran to protect the Gods and other celestial beings. He granted her a boon so that those who worshipped him on Ekadasi will reach heaven, and those who observed fasting and rituals stringently on the Vaikunta Ekadasi will be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Participate in archana rituals to tune into the energies of Lord Vishnu and stimulate your consciousness into realizing his 9 different forms. Meditating or praying to his form is a very powerful way of expanding your abilities and intelligence.

Astrological Significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi – December 21st, 2015 IST

Vaikunta Ekadasi, the 11th Moon, falls between mid-December and mid-January. It is the Vedic month of Dhanur, when the Sun is transiting the sign of Dhanu or Sagittarius. It is also called the Margazhi month, when Lord Vishnu expands himself to pervade every corner of the world. It is the most auspicious of all the 11th Moons, because it is strongly believed that on this day the gates to heaven open.

Praying to Lord Vishnu on the day of Vaikunta Ekadasi brings liberation. The shadow planet Ketu supports spiritual enhancement or upliftment. Astrologically, the 12th house signifies moksha, or liberation from the repetitive cycles of birth on Earth. This year planet Ketu is in the 12th house of the natural zodiac. This placement of Ketu is very suitable for worshipping Lord Vishnu for Moksha (salvation).

Having this rare and ideal placement of Ketu in the 12th zodiac sign and worshiping the different forms of Vishnu will pave the way for liberation, cessation of petty worries, and expansion of your consciousness.
